The Fleet Manager (FM) is at the very center of a fast-paced strategic environment. Our customers require individuals, who think strategically and plan ahead of rapidly changing situations while maintaining a positive team oriented attitude. Fleet Managers must be organized and engaged with the team.


Schedule: Monday-Friday 0700-1600 with additional weekend coverage*


Position Responsibilities:


The Fleet Manager will exercise discretion and independent judgment in managing, directing, and overseeing all of the drivers assigned to his/her fleet, as well as overseeing asset utilization to maximize fleet profitability and customer satisfaction and retention. Additionally, the FM coaches, mentors, and trains drivers with respect to administrative items such as payroll, reimbursements, etc., and apply discipline, up to and including termination. Fleet Managers are also responsible for:


  • Fleet and driver productivity, ensuring all assets and drivers have sufficient miles to reach fleet and company revenue goals.
  • Planning and apportioning work for all drivers in fleet.
  • Manage drivers and direct fleet management day-to-day operations.
  • Dispatch drivers to ensure on-time delivery and advise on weather conditions.
  • Contact drivers to swap loads.
  • Oversee tracking of drivers, loads, and receivers.
  • Simultaneously deal with multiple customers and their different special requirements.
  • Coordinate with Load Planners, Driver Managers, and Service Advisors and other departments within CR England to maximize fleet profitability.
  • Negotiate situations to meet expectations of customers, C.R. England, and C.R. England’s professional Drivers.
  • Identify logistical problems and implement solutions.
  • Strategize and plan regarding future workload.
  • Handle and resolve driver complaints and grievances.
  • Handle and resolve urgent situations in a professional and timely manner.
  • Oversee scheduling/ re-scheduling of appointments with customers.
  • Plan and provide for the safety and security of all drivers and fleet assets.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Essential Functions:

FM’s can make decisions that affect drivers without asking management. Such as: coordinating vacation of drivers, handling AR’s, planning and assigning work to drivers, assigning random drug testing, assigning safety quizzes, disciplining/terminating drivers, etc.

  • Directly manage multiple drivers and fleet assets and coordinate/work with with other departments such as HR, Operations, and other Fleet Managers to maximize fleet productivity and profitability.
  • Manage balance between trucks and customer freight.
  • Develop driver relationships to increase employee morale.
  • This job is highly demanding and requires patience and professionalism.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 4 year degree in related field preferred or equivalent on the job work experience.
  • Transportation industry experience preferred.
  • Industry used program knowledge preferred.

Working Environment and Conditions:    

  • Must have the ability to work on more than one assignment at a time with frequent interruptions, changes and/or delays.
  • Must be able to remain focused and work effectively, efficiently, and cheerfully under such circumstances.
  • Must be able to handle incoming requests for assistance via phone and in person while working on other tasks.
  • Must remain professional in light of challenging situations that may occur in the location.


Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of hearing without correction, sufficiently to perceive normal speaking levels and receive detailed information through oral communication in order to facilitate meetings and work with internal customers and stakeholders by telephone and in person.
  • Position may involve kneeling, stooping, bending, pushing, lifting, carrying and moving objects that can weigh up to 25 pounds.
  • Capable of working extended hours, to include weekends, holidays and various shifts (to include evening and night shifts) as necessary.
  • Capable of sitting at a desk for extended periods of time and working computer equipment.
  • Capable of speaking, writing, and reading English well and possessing a good command of the language so that various types of communications may be conducted in English with people of various levels of education and capabilities.
  • Capable of visual acuity, with or without correction, sufficient to prepare and analyze data and figures, view a computer terminal, and read extensively.
